What reseller hosting actually is
A reseller account is one large hosting account with a management layer on top. Instead of a single cPanel, you get WHM — the panel hosts themselves use — and inside it you create, resize, suspend and back up individual cPanel accounts for your clients. Each client sees only their own cPanel, on nameservers that carry your domain, with your brand on the login screen.
You are not renting a server and you are not responsible for it. Hardware, network, the control panel licence, security patching and uptime stay with the upstream host. Your job is packaging, pricing, billing and first-line support.
Is it profitable? The honest arithmetic
Reseller economics are simple: your cost is fixed per month, and every account you add is close to pure margin until you outgrow the plan. If a reseller package costs you the equivalent of about 12,000 FCFA a month and you sell hosting at 3,000 FCFA a month, you break even at four clients. At twenty clients the same package returns roughly 60,000 FCFA a month for costs that did not move.
The real revenue, though, is not the hosting line. It is retention. A client who hosts with you calls you for the redesign, the extra mailbox, the SSL question and the new landing page. Hosting is the cheapest customer-retention product a small web agency can sell, and it converts one-off website projects into recurring income.
Where it goes wrong is support. Ten clients is a pleasant side income; a hundred clients on the cheapest plan with no ticket system is a second job. Price for the support you will actually give.
What you need to start
- A reseller plan with WHM access and enough disk and bandwidth for your first ten to fifteen accounts.
- Your own domain for branding, nameservers and client-facing email.
- Custom nameservers — ns1 and ns2 on your domain — so clients never see the upstream provider.
- Two or three hosting packages of your own with clear disk, email and site limits. Three tiers convert better than one.
- A way to bill: WHMCS if you want automation, or Mobile Money plus invoices while you are small.
- A support channel your market actually uses. In Cameroon that means WhatsApp alongside email.
Setting it up, step by step
- Order a reseller plan and receive your WHM login and shared IP.
- Register your brand domain and point ns1 and ns2 to the IPs provided, then register those nameservers at your registrar.
- In WHM, create packages: define disk quota, bandwidth, number of addon domains, email accounts and databases per tier.
- White-label the panel — set your company name, logo, support URL and root nameservers so client emails come from your brand.
- Create one test account end to end: install WordPress, issue SSL, create a mailbox, send and receive mail. Fix anything odd before a paying client sees it.
- Write your terms: what is included, what backups you promise, how quickly you respond, and what happens on non-payment.
- Publish a simple pricing page and start migrating the clients you already manage.
How to price in the Cameroonian market
Do not compete with the cheapest international host on price; you cannot win and you would not enjoy the customers it attracts. Compete on the things a foreign host cannot offer: billing in FCFA by Mobile Money, support in French and English, a human who answers on WhatsApp, and someone who will actually fix a broken WordPress install rather than tell the client it is 'outside our scope'.
A workable ladder is three tiers: an entry plan for a single brochure site, a mid plan for a business with mailboxes and a couple of sites, and a top plan for stores. Bundle the domain into the annual price so the client has one renewal to remember. Charge annually where you can — it removes most of your collections work.
Getting your first ten clients
- Move the sites you already maintain onto your own reseller account, with the client's consent and in their name.
- Offer free migration; it is a couple of hours of your time and removes the main reason people stay put.
- Target businesses whose sites are visibly broken or whose email lands in spam — fixing deliverability is a compelling first job.
- Partner with graphic designers and printers who get website requests they cannot fulfil.
- Publish plainly priced plans. Vagueness reads as expensive in this market.
- Ask every satisfied client for one introduction; referrals close far faster than advertising.
The mistakes that cost new resellers money
- Overselling capacity, then discovering every client is slow at the same time.
- Registering client domains in your own name — it destroys trust the day someone wants to leave.
- No backups of your own beyond the host's, and no test restore.
- Undercharging for support and absorbing unlimited requests into a 3,000 FCFA plan.
- Monthly billing by cash collection, which becomes a full-time chase.
- Promising uptime you cannot verify. Say what you will do when something breaks instead.
Frequently asked questions
What is reseller hosting?
- Reseller hosting is a hosting account with WHM on top, letting you create and manage separate cPanel accounts for your own clients under your own brand and nameservers, while the upstream provider maintains the server.
How does reseller hosting work?
- You buy a block of disk, bandwidth and accounts wholesale. In WHM you define packages and create a cPanel account per client. Clients log into their own cPanel on your nameservers, pay you directly, and contact you for support; you escalate server-level issues upstream.
Is reseller hosting profitable in Cameroon?
- It can be, because costs are fixed and margins improve with each client. A reseller package usually breaks even at four or five small clients, and the bigger return is retention — hosting clients keep coming back for design and maintenance work.
Do I need WHMCS to start?
- No. WHMCS automates ordering, invoicing and suspension, which pays for itself once you pass roughly twenty clients. Below that, manual invoices and Mobile Money payments are perfectly workable.
Will my clients know who the upstream host is?
- Not if you use the custom nameservers and white-label branding included with the plan. Panel logins, system emails and nameservers all display your own domain.
How much does a reseller plan cost?
- See the reseller plans page for current pricing in USD with the FCFA amount at checkout. Plans can be paid with MTN Mobile Money, Orange Money, card or crypto, and resource limits can be raised later without moving accounts.
What support am I responsible for?
- You handle your clients directly — website questions, mailbox setup, panel walkthroughs. Server hardware, network, control panel and security are handled upstream, and you can escalate a ticket at any time.
